Tech help, plainly

Getting your Keys house tech running the day you arrive

More tech help, plainly

The car is unloaded, the air conditioning is catching up, and the first thing anyone wants is the WiFi password to work again. It usually does not, at least not right away.

A house that sat empty since spring wakes up in a certain order. Follow it and most of the technology is back the same afternoon.

First: power, then patience

Turn the internet equipment on first, before the TV or anything else. That is the modem, and the router if you have a separate one. Give them a full ten minutes. Everything in the house depends on them, and they take longer to wake up than anything else.

If someone shut off the internet service for the summer, this is the moment to call the company and turn it back on. Nothing else works until that is done.

Then, one thing at a time

TV boxes and streaming sticks next. They will want updates, and updates take a while. Let them finish.

Then the printer. Then anything smart, like a thermostat or a doorbell camera. Each one will complain that it cannot find the network until the router is fully awake, so if you rushed step one, this is where it shows.

The things that do not survive a summer

Heat and humidity are hard on electronics, and a closed-up house in July gets both. Every season a few things do not come back. Printers with dried ink. Batteries in remotes and keyboards. Old surge protectors. A router that was already tired in May.

If something is dead, it is dead. Do not spend your first evening back fighting it.

Passwords you forgot over the summer

This is the most common call I get in the fall. The email password, the streaming password, the WiFi password on a sticker that faded. Most of these can be recovered, and it goes much faster with someone walking you through it than with a search engine at eleven at night.

When to call

If the internet is on and something still will not connect, that is a good time to call. We sort it out on the phone, and if I need to see a screen, I can. Same person you talked to last spring, picking up where we left off.

If you are one of the people I already help up north, nothing changes when you come down. Same number, same me. Your help came with you.
